414 Sub. Cab. Plans Needed

Anyone have a plan for a box for the 414 speaker? Looking to reproduce about 30-100 Hz. smoothly if possible.

Prefer a cabinet for one but will take a cabinet for 2 inside as well.

Ported or sealed is fine.

Guess we will go with the approx. 3.5 cu. ft. ported box like in the Altec speaker building book for the biflex speaker.

Hopefully will get some bass out of it....

Due to its low Qts, this driver isn't designed to go low without considerable series resistance, such as from a tube amp or high DCR inductor.

If you put it in a large cab and drive it with an SS amp and no series resistance it will begin rolling off around 300Hz unless tuned high in a small cab.

It will take a doubling of Re to get solidly into the 30s, with a 6dB hit on efficiency and an amp that's rated for a 16 ohm load. Cab size will need to be ~8ft^3.

With a modest 3 ohms of series R, cab size will be ~4.17ft^3, F6 = ~40Hz, which can be tuned lower, though it will need to be near a wall to maintain a ~flat response.

Cabinet will be in the corner, if two cabinets, one in the corner and one next to it.

Alnico 419-8B speakers, my mistake on the earlier post he got them a while back, I guessed wrong. forums

Crossover is at 100 hz, electronic, 12 db slope.

Amplifier is McIntosh MC2105.

Never heard or seen one. I know it's a 12" bi-cone, but unless you can get me the T/S specs, any recommendations I make would be purely a guess based on the 414-8B specs..... so what do you want to do?

Of course we are going to pursue this.

Plenty of walls available going inside a pool house to add bass in a non-critical outdoor listening situation.

No party sound reinforcement for dancing either. forums

He already has the speakers and wood and Mac. solid state older style amp. with lower damping factor I believe.

Unfortunately it cannot be hooked up mono so two separate boxes will have to be made or else we run one channel with two speakers in one box.

100 watts per channel available. 4-16 ohm taps.

Got about two weeks to finish the design. forums

Hi,

If you are under time constraints and need low frequencies make the tube enclosure I shared in a previous post. It is good for 25 hz to 125 hz. You can hang it up on the ceiling or put it most anywhere. Just get a 12 foot tube of the right diameter and cut three feet off one end. Mount the woofer in one end of the tube and clamp the other tube over it so the woofer is in there and away you go.
